Re: laptop issue

try putting the hdd into a normal pc or something.
Once you have access instantly do a snapshot of it. afterwards try stuff like scandisk or manually hack urself the important data.

I don't quite understand this bit. Did Xubuntu not recognise the HDD? Or did the live CD not actually work in the first place?

You could try a USB hard drive enclosure - something similar to this. Windows should see it as mass storage device and give you access to the files, assuming it isn't too corrupt. (you probably done this already)

Re: laptop issue

at the beginning xubuntu didnt load up at all, it was something with my usb...anyway i fixed it, so i loaded xubuntu and to my surprise it didnt even show the hdd!! so i guess it is not recognised.....
i loaded another live cd, where I can find the hdd and its partitions, howver i can only access 2 partitions on which the needed files are stored...as soons as i choose sda2 , it freezes......
i made a short test for hdd, and it was reading failures Confused

Re: laptop issue

Personly i dont think its a matter off unaccessible file-tables, but a real hardware failure.

Understand the laptop got dented on the place where the HDD is.If this is not a SSD then there are spinning disks in them with in between on mm size needles, who will read the data of the magnetic disks.
If the casing of the HDD is dented, probably these disks are not aligned anymore or one of the needles bumped onto the disks surface. Big problem Sad

first of all, if u have fizical errors on hdd like this then u shouldnt touch anything if u dont know what u doing, each time u make on the disk tests, scandisk software operations, trying to acced the disk, ect ect u damage it more and more up to a moment it wont be accesable...

u also canot use a system as that to get the data out from the damaged hdd, because the system going to crash or hand while it will going to trying acces tbe damaged sectors

the most logical thing to do is to make a raw copy of the sectors, maybe by PING software, or some other program that will work with damaged disk, beter read before using any... then from that copy u can restore the data to good working drive or unpack it somewhere

Re: laptop issue

try to make what i do always, hit it few times with the hand, reeboot, and see if the errors disapeared or...if you are unlucky you start to have more errors.

if your file system is damaged, use a hex editor (or do a bitcopy of the hdd, since when it gets recognised by system but cant be read out bitcopy is still possible) to get the backup file system list at the end of the hdd. Windows has problems finding that one so try on linux.

I had that problem myself once, my bro fixed it for me so cant explain into detial sorry.
