Well, I guess I can suggest my ideas to you Para, however I must first understand what kind of usage are you going to expect and put your laptop to.

For example, you want it for general office work and gamewise only Quake III Arena or do you want some other high-end games running like Crysis etc.?

Because if you need a laptop that's pure performance then that's going to be pretty costly, taking into consideration the ah, "crysis" we are in. But if you need only email checking and office applications, and gamewise Quake III Arena then a simple laptop is fine. I believe, like any Toshiba Laptops are pretty worth their money.

What do you require from your laptop? For now I understood you want performance, slimy style & Low power consumption, correct?

Hey there man. I am interested in the new M18X from Alienware but also in the ASUS NX90. I love big screens. But the Asus does not have a good video card for games. I want my laptop to look stylish and also be good for games and movies. I heard though Asus have problems with their screens, so I am not too comfortable to know that someday the screen will just die. Thanks for the post and I await your suggestions!

Thanks for the info kszksz, I already am aware of those laptops. I read many things about them and laptops in general and all have certain problems. Makes me so shy about buying one... pf Sad

Re: Alienware M18X

i had the alienware m9750 gtx, it lasted around 3 years Big grin mainly had problems with GPU however, drivers were never great and it got really really hot. It also weighed about 4kg which is far too much for a laptop as portability is decreased with it being so fucking heavy in your backpack when you have other books and equipment XD i would say, if u want to game on a laptop go for something smaller but still powerful, u can find equivalent components for cheaper, with alienware you are paying mostly for the brand name and the nice logo Happy

It will be very heavy. Also, you are paying for the alienware name, which i never liked, and i like even less now after they were bought out by dell.

Please search for alternatives such as:

  • • 15.6" 1920x1080 WXGA
  • • Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU
  • • FREE Game - Shogun 2 Limited Edition: Total War
  • • 4GB (4GBx1) DDR3-1333 RAM
  • • NVIDIA GTX460M 1.5GB Video
  • • Intel HM65 Mainboard
  • • 500GB 5400RPM SATA300 HDD $1219
of course, customizable. They also have many other choices over there at cyberpower: http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/category/notebook/

also check out IBuyPower, they have some good deals too: http://www.ibuypower.com/

both sellers contain the latest GPUs/sandy bridge, if you're into that kind of thing. You are getting more for your money. Spend the extra 800 you'll be saving (subtract shipping) on a new desktop or anything.

There are many other pre-built/gaming laptop sellers out there, but these are the two most reputable that i can recommend.

Re: Alienware M18X

Thanks for the heads up Tyrant, yes... I read about Alienware having such problems with drivers and overheating, so I am reluctant on getting one. Also Joey, thanks for the recommendations, but I see that I cannot get the Batallion as I live in Romania. Would have been a nice option to be honest. Still, I am very determined to buy the Sony VAIO VPCF21Z1E/BI as it has one if not the best
picture quality in a laptop and I can still play many games on it (for instance Dead Space 1&2 at full quality). I don't know how much I will be gaming on it, but I always want to get the best I can afford in the chance I might one day delve full throttle into gaming. Thanks a lot again guys!

you don't have to use the manufacturer's drivers, usually you can sub for nvidia's latest graphic drivers (same with radeon, the few times i have experiments). But if you decide on using nvidia's latest drivers from their site, keep a back-up of your manufacturer's just in case.
