i dont think you should stop trying cos with quake the good thing is that always there will be someone who is gonna be (much) worse than you 
i myself think i'm a medium to bad player but even so i get some really good games 
i play on bro tdm and usually i get 100+ frags on a 200 fraglimit cos the other players are not so good here is my advice. play more on a private server with bots and try to hunt down and play with really good players. it doesnt matter if you lose, just dust yourself, spectate and wait until the next match and do what you saw on spectate
