why from scratch?
Use debian, (www.debian.org) download the net install and use apt-get the best install system ever (just apt-get install what ever you want)

well...he asked for a link ..i prefer lfs...so I posted it Happy

Debian is also good...but i want more control ...so compile the whole shit ur self is the way to go I think. It can ofcause be a mess if u are not carefull with the packages options when u configure them and also compiler flags.

But this is just my preference, im not saying that lfs is better.
It also has the advantage that a n00b perhabs would learn what a base system consists of and how to use those programs.

If you got Linux started and running It aint that bad, get the install file from http://www.idsoftware.com/ (get linuxq3apoint-1.32b-3.x86.run from somewhere)
(I presume you are in console, couse gui sucks (if you are not in console go there now control+alt+f2 (f#, and f7 to go back))
./linuxq3apoint-1.32b-3.x86.run that should start the install.
After that goto the installed dir and run ./q3ded -fs_game excessiveplus etc etc

Free yourself use Linux.

Hi, I downloaded the linuxq3apoint-1.32b-3.x86.run. Is that ALL I need or is that just an update to 1.32 point release? Do I need a working copy of Quake3 in Linux first?

Also, my old cfg files and stuff should still work correct?

and ALSO (Laughing, is there a way to make a clickable executable like the batfiles in windows to start these servers? I am running REDHAT 9 and yes, I will take the nice gui before best performance Happy

Just redownload it, and yes you need the "Orriginal" pk3 files for the server to be able to start the maps, and your own custom maps

Help with starting a linux server

I have copied the root Quake III Arena files, the baseq folder and the excessiveplus folder to my linux box, and I put the file in the Quake3Arena folder.

This is what happens

[linus@localhost Quake3Arena]$ ./linuxq3apoint-1.32b-3.x86.run
Verifying archive integrity...Error in MD5 checksums: 4df0015a2bb7c1d4d88a2ebe8a6214ac is different from 3c4a321e0fd5e5596ea8f703239248c6

I have redownloaded the file from IDSoftwares ftp twice and also tried to download it from one other source. 3 files, same error all times.
