Is it at night colder than outside?
hmmm and all derivations of it come under the broad usage of onomatopoeia, so it is really up to the user how it is represented in textual form. The amount of letters and the capitalisation should not matter as long as the person who reads it can understand what it means.
Hmmm :-k
only yes is the correct answer
ye
humm.
i think it depends on how long you want to say it. like if you are saying a frustrated "hm!" it might be 1 "m". however, if you are thinking hard it might be anywhere between 2-7. if you just fell like spamming, you just put as manyu as you want.

I still stand by my rule... if its a frustrated "hm!", you can still write it as "hmmm!", but the last 2 m's are silent...
why two silent mm's hmm? what made you think that? surely anyhow it should be the h thats silent mmm?
No, mmm is the pre-verb to "mmm'kay" - anyone knows that
