dpi/cpi needed is based on cm/360, resolution and fov.
if you play 1600x900@fov90 @ 10 cm for a 360 you already need 1625.6 dpi.
if you go lower with the cm you need even more.
q3 players mostly don't need that much because a lot of players had 3.0, wmo and so on, mice with less dpi, also mostly crt's which run 800x600@120 hz.
besides that, the average progamer has mid-low sens, so at more then 15 cm on average - ofc you don't need more then 400 then.

edit: mx518 has slight dirt problems (imo) and prooven drift control/move interpolation in 4 directions ( -|\/ )which you can't turn off. And for most players its to heavy.
