Nvidia driver on redhat
Ok guys, Thanks to this forum and the links some of you have provided i currently have quake installed on redhat 9, BUT i cant run it because i cant figure out how to install the nvidia driver.
What i have done so far: Downloaded the driver i need for my system and uncompressed it. All of the data is in a folder on the root of the drive.
I have read and i think i understand what they are talking about but i dont know how to start the box without going into X server right away. I'm pretty GREEN to linux somehow i figured out how to bind the command i need to run to the up arrow key, all i need to know is how do i start in , well, excuse me for saying this but "dos mode" so i can run this command......
Thank you all and this great community for supporting newbes!!
You can reach the console by pressing control+alt+F# (F# being f1, f2 orso).
please dont call it dos mode .
And there are enough posts on the redhat/fedora site I believe on this subject
there is also the terminal where you can run all these commands. Or commandpromt if you prefer ms lingo

IT IS CONSOLE, console is WAY more powerfull then the fucking commandpromt!!!

I think gieltje is taking his linux way to seriously
Keep in mind that the words "DOS" & "CommandPrompt" refer to Microsoft & Windows...something diehard linux users don't like to use.
I use linux but NOT to that extreme
Sorry rusty...I use windows for gaming & video editing and I use linux for networking and other uses
Well that may be a big help to me tho, Do you have any more keyboard shortcuts that might be usefull to me?
Yes;
Control+alt+F# (switch between consoles (1to6 console 7 and up gui's (5 on knoppix)))
tab (use tab!! it comes in verry handy in the console, autocompletes filenames, commands, dirs ets (try the first few charracters of a command and hit tab a few times)
some command | grepp (fetches all output in grepp)
shift+page up or down (goes up or down through the console).

Omg... I dont care how "fucking" more powerful the freaken console is! For a windows user the TERMINAL that I use for these commands is LIKE the commandpromt in windows in the way that the commandpromt is a mini version of oldschool MS DOS the same way the TERMINAL is mini version of leaving X via ctrl+alt+f# for the CONSOLE in RedHat.
You may hate Windows and MS any amount you feel like, you can't take it away from them that if it WASN'T for Bill "Satan" Gates and his Microsoft, the IT revololution wouldnt have come as far as it has today. Windows made it possible for people that werent hardcore hackers to use the PC for work and fun and internet in a way that wasnt possible before windows. Sure Linux is free and the little I have used it so far I like it a lot, but I dont have to hate windows because I like Linux..
It's people like you Gieltje that makes people stay away from Linux by putting everything else down and making it sound like if you dont use freaken CONSOLE but like having your work environment easy on the eye as well you might aswell skip linux all the same. I know because I have been interested in Linux a long time but EVERY SINGLE time I talk to people about Linux they start "BLABLABLA You have to run it without X, only console or it sucks blablabla" until I talked a while with Unpl4y3r who was just helpful getting me started.
And gibletgrinder, when I had vid probs it automatcially put me in the textmode after trying to start X unsuccessfully.. Also, I am running redhat 9 too, isnt there an option at startup to run textmode only? On nvidias homepage there is also a helpfile you can read at the same page where you download the driver, I recommend you read it. It takes you to the whole process of installing the nvidia driver to a linux box. I managed to install it but I uninstalled it later because it still refused to change my resolution (now I learned that it was because I had the wrong settings for my display but I havent had any need of the drivers since because I only use Linux as a web/quake3/ftp server anyway)
:-k Interesting...I'll have to research that also. I use ATI Radeon 8500DV which gave me some serious problems with linux but now they are fixed. I dont know much about Nvidia's cards with linux, however I will read the information.
^Do you like that card cause I was thinking of getting 1?
Well that may be a big help to me tho, Do you have any more keyboard shortcuts that might be usefull to me?
There is no such thing as a dumb question, but there is a such thing as a dumb answer......
