Plz help me with my connection
I have 128kbps ADSL (128kbps downstream and 64kbps upstream). In quake I have:
\cl_packetdup 1
\rate 6400
\snaps 40
Are these optimal settings for such type of connection or should something be set another way? Im asking because I rarely get a ping below 100 when playing on BRO servers, and I see that other ppl from Poland have good pings (I mean between 50 and 80). Is that only a matter of faster con or proper setup of network in q3? Is 128 ADSL fast enough to ensure smooth gameplay? These vars above are the ones I remeber at the moment - Im not at home...
I will be grateful for any help
I did a search for 'Quake3 128 adsl settings' and got his web site
http://www.planetquake3.net/tweak/glossary_commands.html
Here some setting that the website recommends:
"rate" - This setting controls packets to ensure a good connection. If you have an ISDN modem (128K) then this can be set to around 8000. If you have a 56K modem then this should be around 3000-4500 depending on your connection speed. If you are on a LAN or have ADSL modem, then this can be around 24000 or perhaps even higher. Experimentation is required to find the optimal setting.
"snaps" - This is possibly the most important setting for getting a good connection. As everyone knows, in Quake 2, your gameworld updates depended on your current FPS so slower computers were at a disadvantage. Now, in Quake 3, your snaps setting determines how many updates you recieve from the server. 56K modems should have a setting of around 20. ISDN modems (128K) should be around 40 as should any other fast connection devices (LAN, T1 etc....). Remember to read my cg_lagometer section for tips on "snaps".
"cl_packetdups" - As the name suggests, this setting is used to send multiple packets to compensate for lost packet drops. This setting should be set at 1 unless you have a VERY good connection in which case set this to 0. Use the lagometer to decide on which setting to use.
"cl_maxPackets" - This setting puts a limit on the maximum amount of packets that can be sent to the server via the client. This setting is useful for people with slower modems. The default setting is 30 (comparable to a 56K modem), but lower this if you have a 33.6K modem or less, and higher this setting if you have an ISDN or higher modem.
I hope this will help you stollo.

Hey stollo, let me know if you get better pings. Also check that you have good wiring from the wall to the modem to your computer. When I got my cable modem installed, it came with free CAT .5e wiring which I found to be of low quality!
Huh I never though about that how can you test to see if its of good quality?
I use to have problems connecting at start up between my router and cable modem, for a while I thought maybe I had done something wrong. I would check every setting and reboot, reboot, & reboot. Then I called a tech buddy from work and he suggested changing out the CAT 5e cables to see if that will help, and sure-as-shit...I bought new cables and I would connect every time!
You can look to see if the quality of the cable is constructed good or not, and in most cases, you get what YOU PAY FOR!! The cables that are offered by the Cable/DSL ISP's are the poorest available (these cables are offered free as part of installation) There are good cables and poor cables out there. Also keep in mind that the length of the cables has an effect on connectivity. My rule is to keep the length under 15 ft between broadband modem & computer and/or router.
So...if you have had lost connections but you know your settings are good, try a cable swap and see what happens. If any of you are into car or home audio, you know how important it is to have the best wire possible for excellent sound. Treat your internet connection the same way...
Giblet - should we ever meet face to face, I swear Ill kiss you Thx a lot!
