Hello,
I have this problem - i got Core 2 Duo cpu in my laptop and Q3 runs not very good on it (fps drops to ~20 sometimes for a moment). I found out that there is an issue with Q3 on dual core processors and there is a command r_smp which eliminates the fps dropdown. Unfortunately it also hangs the computer once in a while when new map is loaded or on the start of quake. Did you experience the same problem? And most important - do you know any solution to it?
Thx.

are you sure that the hang on map load is caused by that?

ie. is it a full system hang, or you can escape to main menu in q3?

some servers have faulty rotation files which cause that.

I am proud of spreading a pirated Excessive Plus version and claim to be the original author, yay!

Its 100% connected to r_smp (when i play w/o it it doesnt happen, w/ it happens 50/50 when i run Q3 and once in 3-4 when new map is loaded).
Its possible to return to windows via Ctrl+Alt+del and killing Q3 process...

r_smp "1" is only for old multicpu boards (PII and PIII),not for dualcore.

Nope. Wit r_smp "0" i have 30-120fps, with r_smp "1" i have 300fps. The problem is it f**king crashes Q3 Love struck

Any more suggestions?

Yes,it chrash...as i said above,r_smp "1" in Quake 3 is not for dualcore (or quadcore) Winking
Remember how old that game is.
SMP stands for "Symmetric MultiProcessing" it represents one of the earliest styles of multiprocessor machine achitectures. For example old boards with 2 PIII Xeon processors (in that old days mostly used on workstations) can handle it.
2 or more cores are not the same as 2 or more processors.
The programmers of Quake 3 could not optimize r_smp for multicore processors...cause they don't exist in these days.
In that case, you could not solve your problem with r_smp "1"

You will find the same command in Quake 4...and here it works with multicore processors (or hyper-threading processors like my old P4).
But this is a newer game...writen with the knowledge about "more cores".

(damn,i sound like a wiseacre  sorry for that)
