server hacking?
Hey my first post
alright so my friend is planning on running an e+ server with 10-16 slots (havnt decided yet due to not know if it'll lag or not lol). his internet is probably fine for 8 or 10, its 12mb download and 2mb upload. He got all the server files and stuff configured, and then he realized that his dad has his business running on the same network. Hes worried about his dad getting hacked since hes opening up 27960-27962 on HIS computer (his dad has a firewall and is connected with a wpa key). If his dad's computer gets hacked, they can get access to important things that arnt supposed to be released lol.
bottom line is, is there anyway his dad's laptop can get hacked by him running a server and opening the ports 27960-27962 on his pc?
there is always a way, but if he makes sure to do the following:
use 1.32c (NOT 1.32b) point release, and open only the needed ports, and make sure that the ports are only open for quake3 (not any program), those chances will be slim.
outgoing, the ports might be open, but he also has to open them ingoing.
and make sure that his router is responding properly (good NAT settings).
there are many tutorials governing this on the net, search them up (its quite a wide topic, too wide for explaining here).
as a last resort (after trying out a few tutorials) tell him to use some packet checking utility, to see where the packets get stuck.
Done, thanks man. He had the server running, but no one could connect..the port was open in his firewall, and he could see it under Local, but even if we typed in his IP and the port it wouldnt connect, any ideas?
