normal protocol for voIP communication. But its not shit like skype. Phones based on SIP protocol has majority part of business with voIP. Rules for using are the same like skype but youre using real/software telephone. you will get tel number and you can call. If you will buy credit, you can call to mobile phones and erotic lines if you want.... Calling to SIP telephone numbers is free of cost like skype. SIP has many many advantages. Your comp is only host. Via your comp and connection dont run another calls. Only your (better quality). If you will buy voIP gateway, you can use your analog phone for calling via your SIP account,.....

Skype vs SIP

I'm using skype at my notebook, but VoIP via SIP and a "real phone" when I'm at home. To be honest, I don't really see the "many many advantages" in your post:

There are lots of phones available to call people via Skype only, ofc this includes the public switched telephone network as well.

For me this number is related to my internet account which I'm sharing. Means when when I'm on a business trip I either take the whole connection with me to make calls via 'real' SIP using a SIP softphone, or I use Skype. Since there isn't any difference in quality of the phone calls for me and since this connection doesn't belong only to me, I always decided for using Skype so far.

Hm, I didn't get that. All my VoIP calls at home are getting routed via my internet connection given by my ISP. Means when I'm downloading with a high data rate, let's say 250 kByte/s, the persons I'm sharing my connection with will have really hard problems to understand the person they wanted to talk to. The whole dataflow gets routed via your broadband connection and it doesn't matter if it's SIP, H.323 or a proprietary skype protocol.

...or go and buy a skype compatible phone which is probably as expensive as a VoIP hardware gateway.

For sure SIP has some really good advantages. Hopefully it gets more secure (ever tried sniffing some calls with e.g. Wireshark?) within the next years, but with all the competition going on right now between the manufacturer I believe that they will do it. Btw, ever considered what will happen if your internet connection gets down during an emergency case? I have to admit, even Skype won't help you then and that's why I'm parallel using ISDN.

lol, they made extra topic for it Big grin On czech internet you can find one good article named 10 reasons why dont use a skype - http://www.root.cz/clanky/10-duvodu-proc-nepouzivat-skype/

1. closed protocol - you dont know if your calls arent recorded, etc. You cant use another software using this protocol like you can do it with im msn (alternative: miranda, trilian,...). you are limited by platform and hardware, which is supported by skype corporation. If they software dont support mac (i dont know if yes or not, its only example) and you have a mac, you cant call via skype.

2. central service management - if will have central server problems or will be hacked, you are in ass

3. data flow control - user side: nothing. Skype corp. side: huge. You cant control data flow. Data flow way is controlled by central server so you cant chance anything change.

4. supernode - users, which sitting behind proxy, NAT of some strict firewall are simple NODs. Users which using good link with public IP are supernodes. If youre supernode, your link is used by central skype server like exchange for data flow of calls for another users. in practice you have encumbered payed link and your hardware. If you have a FUP you can have problem.

5. support of commercial company - they are using your hardware and your payed internet connection and on reverse side you giving them possibility to use they service. But they are incasing a money for they service and you get nothing.

etc etc . i dont have a time and mood now to write and translate all Happy
