Spam, by imo'ish definition, is pushing the room allowed by weapon-switch timing to the highest extremities, basically just punching the keys and not taking care to aim. There are many forms of spam, as described by class-mate Shell, but i think this is the purest definition.
Spam is not spam when you punch the keys and you don't shoot... coz it's -10 seconds in warm-up.

Just non-stop grenade/rocket/plasma/bfg at a spot = spam. Tossing a couple of them at a logical point where you assume some one will show up because of timing or spawning = not spam.
IMPOSSIBLE to do with any kind of direct-hit weapon, I've seen some people talk about f.e "mg spam" and that makes me lose faith in humanity.

Oh yeah, like mad pointed out, using as many weapons as possible in the shortest amount of time possible when attacking just because you can't aim is also subject for the definition. In that particular case I'd actually be willing to bend a bit on the direct-hit part since people like to put a bit of shotgun in there too since it has kind of low standards on the aiming departement.

Spam? Shooting continuously without target in sight is one form of spam, just hoping to get a hit somehow. Another form is scrolling through weapons shooting with the appearance of having some kind of aim without really knowing what weapon to use (like "he's really really close but railgun is next when I hit mwheelup, so whateva, even tho shotgun would be much better with him covering 3/4 of my monitor i just switch and shoot rail cause i missed the last shot kekkekekek").
All of this is always spam. If a noob spams in dm5 and no one's there to see it... the noob is still spamming. E.O.F.

no such thing as spam cos in gmae u shoot every second allmost wether u change ur weapons or not. spam jsut a thing to blame if u lost to someone

hmm....now i would actually agree with that cos to be honest if u play ok..then ull own spammers..
however there is such a thing as spam..and its been amply defined above...however id like to point out that the key is that a person who switch spams keeps shooting at the same spot...and he never actually hits an enemy with almost all of his shots.....however there are people who switch very very fast and hit the enemy with a large percentage of their shots (watch hards video 
and that can in no fucking way be called spam....in fact doing that takes a HUMONGOUS amount of skill....wish i could do that...
hmm on the topic of mg and sg spam...well i agree shooting someone with sg a lot is not exactly the most "talented" way of killing but i include sg in the average switch cycle just cos its so damn effective..mind u it only works in tdm and freeze cos if ur playing someone good in 1on1 and u start using sg a lot ull get ur ass kicked....
also since we are on the topic of spam ..mite as well make a comment on the generally frowned upon habits...like spam/camp etc etc and whatever else...my view on it is this..its definitely bad..and i loose respect for anybody who does it consistently but i see no reason y anyone should complain..as i keep saying if u think its bad then own his/her/its ass....anybody good can do that...so whats the point of constantly cribbing about it? cliche but true - let your actions speak for themselves....
ps: mind u im one of the most verbose people around so although i feel that way i myself find it hard to keep quiet..o well nobodys perfect least of all me.

Thank you all for the lack of spam/verbosity 
. Aimless quantity shooting in the hope of fragging - that is perhaps the most annoying type, eg grenades. Then there is the aimed spam like excessive use of the mg and sometimes with camping. I do not see excessive use of the sg since it can be quite hard to kill with that and more usually it's used to finish off or close-to or flying frag. LG spam is not nice either - especially on CTF maps where the flag can have many campers all using the LG. I suppose generally it is the flow of the game which matters. If a way of using weapons or other stops the flow, then it is anti-gaming and should be stopped. In the absence of clear rules and referees this is often in a grey area.
One other pet concern is that teams are often uneven in number and/or power of players. There needs to be a numbering system,ie an index of skill, so that teams can be balanced in power. Maybe hard to achieve but would give better games since teams in which players are evenly matched are usually better games.

What I think about spam:
If there are unlimited ammo and all weapons given why not shoot if it doesnt annoy you yourself. WTF I think that people who say "spammer", "switchwhore", "camper" should better play not excessive but baseq3 cpma or other game why not counterstrike

(Of course, if fighters agree not to do spam then its different.)
I myself try to use as little and accurrate shots as possible to kill. Also I cant just sit in one place, I automatically run around the map. But if one decides to do it another way I dont say he's a fcuk.
