To all the Linux Users
well donno if u got a answare on all this oftopic... but u can use XQF as serverbrowser... its kinda same as ASE but just for linux... google it and have fun
It runs pretty smooth in my pc but mouse lags when i move it fast. Any solution to this problem? (I use xset m 0 0 to disable accel)
I think I may have one, but I'm not sure if all of it makes sense , but it works for me. You just have to get low latency linux kernel. The best way is to make one for yourself, not taking the kernel from your linux distribution. Default kernels are bloated by drivers/features you don't need, and are optimised for size, not for speed. Recently I experiment with real-time patched kernel and q3, it seems to be the best I've seen regarding linux + q3, but don't know anybody else doing so. The patches are here: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/rt/
After patching, besides the obvious options needed by my system/proc/stuff, I selected:
In "Processor type and features":
Tickless System, High Resolution Timer Support, HPET Timer Support, Preemption Mode - Complete Preemption (Real Time), RCU implementation type: Preemptible RCU, Enable priority boosting of RCU read-side critical sections, Timer frequency (1000Hz) - those are the most important probably.
Setting X-server to high realtime and nice priority, and running q3 under such, as the final step - I think thats enough for now.
Cheers
Thanks glizda i will try real time kernel when my x-fi problem will be fixed. Creative rocks
I was thinking a nice bash script might be useful....
I wrote simple script.
[code:1]#!/bin/bash
quake="ioquake3"
params="+set fs_game excessiveplus +exec ruun.cfg"
address=`echo $1 | cut -d / -f 3 -`
start="$quake $params +connect $address"
$start
[/code:1]
Replace 'ioquake3' with path to your quake executable.
Save script as 'qconnect' in your home directory (for me this is /home/ruun/qconnect) an give right permissions
[code:1]chmod +x /home/ruun/qconnect[/code:1]
Now start Opera and go to preferences
Done. Now we can start game directly from spider using Opera
Btw. I'm using Debian Sid :twisted:
XQF and ioquake is the best way to run it under linux ...

XQF
I'm using Firefox, and it works great, heres how:
In the address bar, type
[code:1]about:config[/code:1]
Then hit enter.
In the main window, right click, then New > String.
For Preference Name:
[code:1]network.protocol-handler.app.q3a[/code:1]
Then for string value, enter the full path to the script.
NOTE: remove the reference to his personal cfg, 'ruun.cfg' in the script. Also, I assume you aren't using ioquake, so change that to quake3, since ioquake doesn't support PunkBuster (as far as I know).
