Since feind is the word sometimes used for a demon or even satan, we can agree on that the painting has biblical and mythological undertones. I'm guessing the painting is from the 18/17th century judging from the look of it, but I can't place it...Rembrandt perhaps? Looks dutch/italian anyhow.
The scene it depicts seems arabic to me, something which took place in North Africa or even Israel?

Did q1 come out in 1993? and was that painting stolen or bought for a record breaking price in 1993???
Just a stupid guess, cos I dont remeber when q1 came out

In 1993 Doom I came out.
One of the levels in Doom was - The Tower of Babel.
Doom is quite close to Quake as it was also made by IdSoftware.
