Which type of connection would you prefer?
ok obviously not an expert but yea if u can get a better connection for the same price range then it looks like its definitely worth a try. but u should be careful before commiting to a long term contract tho. so keep that in mind. also try to find people who are using the 2 connections and get a comparison.
in general cable broadband is subject to variation mostly because it kinda depends on the load. (atleast thats what people tell me) so given the speeds advertised the dsl mite be better.
on the other hand you should check how far you are from the central where your dsl will go.
long distances tend to cuse more trouble with quality (like disconects, spikes, etc).
for example im right next to the central and my connection is fabulous.
ratz hs cable and he has far better ping than most dsl users in cro, even though he has less bandwith than avarage dsl.
be carefull bout contracts, but seems like you would end up better with dsl, i mean ping 100 cant get worse, can it?
Sad to hear u have such bad pings on cable, because cable simply rocks for gaming. It beats the crap out of DSL connections as.far as games and ping are concerned.DSL connections go through satelite while cable goes through an optical cable in the ground.I also have cable [384/160k,yes thats 45-46 kB/s realistic download speed] and I have better ping on german servers then almost everyone, including ppl who have 100 MBit connections [Hi hard ] and also ppl who live in germany :] [35-37 in scoreboard, and 28 in lagometer].So do ppl who live arround u and have better pings then u also use the same provider? If yes, call your provider, tell them about the problem.Keep naging them and be persistent untill they do something about it.As far as "higher speed=lower ping" philosophy,it doesnt apply. At least not on such high speeds. My provider started with 64k speed, and ping was improving with speed increases up to a certain point,200k i think.Once it passed that point, ping is not improving anymore. And I hear its the same thng on DSL connecitons.
Verizon DSL for teh win. It's simply the fastest and most reliable internet connection I've ever seen apart from the T3 connection at Widener Uni in Philadelphia, PA...
\:D/ \:D/ DSL RULES \:D/ \:D/
ask ur provider (for dsl) what he have to tell u about interleaving.
Montreal's Internet Providers suck ass but I'll have to say cable because I had DSL before and I had huge ping loss on poland/germany/sweden servers...

that was because of the connection between ur ISP and the internet, 'cause i live like 2000 miles away from US and i get ping of 100 ms and 90 sometimes, and also people from UK get's ping of 100 and they are like 5000 miles? or more... so those connections passed for less nodes to get to the server, that means they have directly connections to those countries .
Also DSL is good for low connections ( i.e : 50 Mbps and less ) because high speeds ( 100 Mbps and more ) required new tecnology to be used like fiber optics, so u gotta use a cable connection but that''s for enterprises who needs super speeds, but for a regular internet dude XD! u will be happy with DSL...because u can take advantage of the Upstream and Downstream WAY better than cable...but that's just my opinion...peace...
Be careful Cryptor, I would hate to see ya end up in a situation like mine....50 ping on USA servers on good DAYS, almost all nights end up with ping around 150 to 200 on USA servers...250 to 300 on euro. talking about sucking, now that sucks.
This is totally an ISP problem for me. Had the same thing last year, they fixed it after a month of calling everyday. So far, havent felt like putting forth the effort to stay on them about it this time.
Oh, and I am on DSL, 1536/384.
The interleaving referred to above is a connection setting made by the DSL company. It is to prevent errors, spikes, dropped signals, etc, but it causes a delay in the signal (I think it rechecks multiple times??). Therefore pings will be higher (roughly 30 to 40 ms). I dont know if this applies to your cable connection though, but certainly does to DSL.
