Since my ubuntu 7.10 got useless (starts 2x longer, sometimes dont run any program or i have to wait 1min for run a terminal etc. And it started suddenly without any changed in any settings) and i have to install linux again, iam looking for another distribution. My question is simple. Which linux distribution is the best (based on your own experience) ? I have ubuntu 7.04, ubuntu 7.10 and now downloading mandriva 2008. Still is time to cancel downloading and try something what can be better :-k

Gentoo is a good choice if you can be arsed to compile most of programs from source. In my opinion, this is a good feature since it pushes you to think about the system you want and enables you to optimize the software for your machine. Otherwise, Mint is a clone of Ubuntu with win32codecs and the likes included, handy if you need to reinstall it... I use Gentoo myself and my girlfriend uses Mint Linux (yeah she's a ''beginner'')...

Whatever you do, don't go with SLED... It's a very very naughty distro Smug

Slackware can be cool if you want to learn the internals of your system (esp the pre-2.6.x kernels).

An in case anyone's wondering, I'm not playing any more and probably won't be coming back to the servers again...

Everything depends on how much you are advanced I guess.
I have tried so far few distros and from my nooby experience I can say you should stay with Ubuntu Happy Did you make clean 7.10 install? Or maybe you upgraded from 7.04? Or maybe you added some new unsafe repository and kernel was screwed while upgrading?

Mandriva is paid Sad I mean you can run it on a basis of free sources but it is like half of the possibilities you can have with paid repositories. Same goes for OpenSuse.
Gentoo was too difficult for my nooby ass Happy it is more complicated then easy Ubuntu for sure but maybe you will like it.
You could try also Debian, since Ubuntu is based on that one, you will have easy start at least, many commands are the same.

hehe. i downloaded mandriva 2008 and installed it to second partition. After final restart mandriva didnt start because of "damaged partition" ? So i installed again ubuntu to the same second patition and after that didnt start linux too and like bonus didnt started windows on first partition too Big grin But if i inserted mandriva 2008 and from dvd menu chosen option boot from hdd, windows started (linux not). So i created third partition for shared data between both OS and formated it with universal FAT32. And now i will install new windows to first partition and mandriva to second partition and i will see (i want to see wtf mandriva is if i downloaded it so long time) Winking

Bon moi j'y suis pour rien, c'est a toi que vont les felicitations pour la FFF, t'en a fait une team d'enfer et tu est un joueur remarquable maintenant... Bonne chance!!!

Have another look here : http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/stable/prologue/foreword.html

And btw, MacOS is based on the MACH microkernel but they built a monolithic kernel around it so it's a UNIX, of the BSD variety too Tongue. When I'm on a machintosh, I open up tcsh and feel right at home Winking
