To just pick one it has to be Mega Man 2. I haven't even owned the game myself but adding up all time I've spent playing it at others and borrowing it (people have thought I've owned it just based on how much the casette's been in my NES) it just crushes almost everything. Super Mario World is probably real close, no shocker if it's second and it's another one I've played through many, many times. Kinda weird to have played them through so many times since apart from those two, along with Star Wars (NES) and perhaps Zelda (SNES), I have like never played through any single player games...
I love watching single player games be played though, my hard drive (that didn't crash <3) is full of console speedruns! So for me, the games where you couldn't click the text away and not skip too much of the story are gems xD
I really, truly hope the Wii will bring the FUN back into single player games. I have a hard time thinking it will, but I hope. And if there's anyone who can, it's Nintendo.
Bring back sidescrollers! Even if they HAVE to do it 3D and all fancy effects, go for it. Mega Man X8 showed how it's done.

Yeah, it's a god-damned shame that such a great, climatic and enjoyable game is so short 
Max, dearest of all my friends, i hope you enjoyed getting through the complex plot and hordes of enemies. It musta've been fantastic 2 hours

Maybe KOTOR and Silent Hill 1, and some point and click adventures. Max Payne 2 was really short, so i will put it as some of shortest games i ever played. Of old ancient games, maybe Mortal Kombat series, i still sometimes play few games online
