you will get many replies to this
there is 2 options, nvidia or ati.
The basic premise is ati is the better card(start your flaming boys and girls ) , better display and the most powerful, that said nvida is better with games like doom/quake etc but In most other games its weaker.
both companies make very good powerful cards that more than likely will have an advantage in some cases against each other and look better on paper, but you will in practice really not be able to tell much difference
The other factor to consider is some of the new more powerful cards are bottlenecked by your processor in certain games..
So the 2 questions you need to answer first are
1) what price arena are you thinking and what is your system spec ?
2) What games do you mainly play ?
May I add a third a question...
What does your motherboard support PCI-express or AGP?
You should also probably add some information about other parts in your rig. We wouldn't wanna go and recommend you a card, your system can't fully take advantage of. For instance, does your Psu(Power supplier) have enough power output to handle newer cards?
ups, guess that was 2 questions, but its better to be on the safe side
Edit: hehe...Just noticed that "what is your system spec" from Wax's post, pretty much sums up my both questions. Hmm, that's what you get for posting to early...
there is 2 options, nvidia or ati.The basic premise is ati is the better car...better display and the most powerful...In most other games its weaker.
I have read a shit load about graphics cards because i am building a new pc from scratch, and, tbh, i am an nvidia lover, but in FPS and benchmark tests the difference between similar spec ATI and nVidia cards is really small, like 1fps, but for most stuff i have always went with nVidia so, nVidia is my recommendation over ATI

well thanks for the useful post
as I said in the paragraph below the one you quoted
both companies make very good powerful cards that more than likely will have an advantage in some cases against each other and look better on paper, but you will in practice really not be able to tell much difference
...though I think you need to re-read what you have studied, I have no fave manufacturer, just what is the best card for all round games and it was and maybe still is ATI
for sure if all you play is doom3 and quake4,there is no debate nvidia is better, but for everything else ATI is....
That said....I don’t think we should turn this in to a war of opinion. Its just about trying to help someone make the right choice
Well, one reply will be enough, and that is the one from HQ,if he replyes But untill then,I gotta say I agree with Wax,ATI deffinetly makes better and more powerful cards but due to nvidias contracts with some companies the game manufacturers optimise some games to work better on nvidia cards (doom3,quake 4 for example) so ATIs potential remains unused to the fullest  So write your system spec (PCI-e cards can be little cheaper) and write what games u intend on playing.if u will stick mainly to quake 4 (like I will ) for example,a 6600 GT or 6800 GT would be enough, considering u have plenty of RAM and cpu power.
The 6800 GS (200 US $)is by far the best performance for the money. And whats even greater is that its available in both flavors, PCI-E and AGP.
If 200 $ is still too much then I would suggest the 9800 Pro. Maybe pick one up on e-bay if you feel lucky. But if you have 300 $ to spend, then go with the 7800 GT.
So to cap it off, the 9800 pro (100$), is about half the performance of 6800 GS (200 , which is about three/fourths the performance of the 7800 GT ($ 300).
As for ATI cards, there just not worth the price/performance compared to there NVidia competition.

one of the best v-cards atm:(used for high 3d-games and film)
Nvidia Quattro
the cheapest modell u can get: 700 €
the normal mode: 1500-2000 €
expert mode: 3000 €
this card is the master of the cards, but for u should have multi-cpu´s for that card, maybe for the cheapest modell not!
and yes, the cheapest modell, is also extrem great!
believe me, enough for gaming!
but in your case the 6800 should also be enough(for 1-2years)

pls recommend if 7800 GT can be powered by AMD Athlon 2600+ - 512 Mb ?
i need new videocard...and even used SEARCH-topic to read some info...but cannot decide whether to shoose ATI or NVIDIA.
Who takes me to the top of Decision-Mountain please?
