Antivirus, which one?
don't try do be smarter than everyone, use avira ;} i have tested many for many years on offices 10++ pc's and that's my winner of practical use
Im in the LAN of my university!
If one user has a virus, all users will have it soon!
and i had many probs: each day, when i came home,
it took 3h to get rid of all stuff!
But then Zady recommeded ESET to me!
and everythin was quiet: no viruses, no malware, no shit!
Over the years i was updatin it regularly.
The biggest trouble was to get the keys from the internet!
But lately i bought a laptop and saw a CD of it for 20eus!
And im so happy, that i bought it!
Im really proud, coz it was a very good choise!
The prog updates its database several times each day!
It also updates its core without any! lags!
It checks everythin, that comes in/ goes out:
each webSite, each eMail/file without any recognition!
Further it has a gamer-modus,
which blocks all pop-ups, while ur playin!
Hello khaz,
I had a lot of AntiVirus software on my PC in the last years. From Avira to BitDefender, Kasperski, McAfee and some others. AV-software could make your PC slower, I had some bad experiences with it.
I'm using now Avira 2013 + ZoneAlarm Pro Firewall and I'm using this combination (Avira .... + ZA Pro Firewall) since 3 years without any issues.
I use Microsoft Security Essentials and the built in Windows firewall. Has a very low memory footprint and I've not got any problems in the 6 months I've had it installed. I've used Avast and Avira in the past and both were fine too.
I personally don't think it's worth paying for antivirus or other security apps. If you're not stupid enough to click on a dodgy link and generally don't "experiment" with stuff on your computer, then free alternatives provide more than adequate protection.
For maintenance of pc i use:
1. AVAST free antivirus
2. Spybot - search & destroy
3. CCleaner
4. Revo uninstaller
5. Disk defragmenter
Once per week i do thorough scan and repair all necessary stuff and pc always works fine

just dont download warez and dont install anything from porn sites and your PC cant get a virus
malware bytes blocks quite a few torrent sites so i don't use it. i use Nortern anti virus (and common sense) it does the job.

Or with other words, beazt and skull have absolutely no clue about what they are talking about. Don't draw conclusions about others based on yourself. I earn good money so I pay for the software that I use.
For your enlightenment: Most infections these days are so called drive-by infections that you get on completely normal websites.

It's much more effective if you put the code at a place where it is likely to infect a huge number of PCs, for example news pages or shops where people are much careless then they are on warerz or pr0n sites. Same goes for the OS, currently it's more worthwhile writing malware for Windows rather than Linux. Your PC possibly is already infected and part of a bot net, but you won't find out because you are just too arrogant.
Thanks for the interest in this thread, people.
Tomorrow or in Monday I will format my notebook and get the stuff you recommend the most!
