since about a week (end of semester) i cant fall asleep before 7-8 am. Today i try to sleep since 4am, no chance Confused . This problem is not affiliated with drugs or medicaments, I just feel like my brain can't slow down like it should.. usually I wouldn't care that much, it's kinda normal for me to stay awake much longer than most of the ppl. But my prob now is that im gonna write an exam on friday and i gotta wake up at 7 am to do so.

I wonder if some of u know this prob and maybe got a solution for it.. I thought of simply not sleeping from thursday to friday but i know i'd only write bullshit.. I thought of medicaments (or drugs), but i fear side effects -> I know i could sleep better drunk or stoned, but i always feel more or less shitty the day after (which also would result in writing bs, funny bs though Big grin ).. got no experience with sleeping pills, also fear side effects, for example too long sleep dunno...

rly dunno what to do, i wanna sleep at least 3-4 hours.. i bet some of u know some tricks so let me hear Happy

I remember before I went on sleeping medication, I used to count sheep running through a circle into a fenced in pasture. It usually took me an hour or 2 to finally fall asleep but was best way for me to make myself fall asleep. Perhaps try some Sleepy Time Tea or try some melatonin. Melatonin works fairly well to help sleep. It helps balance the melatonin in your brain if it lacks melatonin which results in sleeplessness.But I would go for the melatonin, is legal to buy, well here in usa anyways. Hope it helps. If not, at least I tried Tongue Cheers Happy

sometimes i have same probs, cant fall asleep maybe untill 3-4am. Inspite of my nick Tongue i dont like take medicines, so found some other solutions that works for me:
1. eat something and imidiatly go to bed (usually some sandwiches with not strong warm tea, but better dont eat something sweet - it increases brain activity)
2. lay to bed with some boooring book or some political\economical reports (usually fall asleep on 10th page Tongue - i think its brain defence counter bullshit Big grin)
3. lay to bad and start to watch some boooooring movie (usually takes 20-30 min to fall into dreams)
4. try to fall asleep in different positions (that trick helped me some time ago - i usually was sleeping on the right side and when poblems started i got thing that better lay on left side and when i totally relax, turn to right side and then i fall asleep without any problems/ Using it untill now)

GL, hope it will help u.

I have this problem rather often, especially after session un the university. The best solution is hard physical exercises. Play football or go to the jym (or how it's called=)). When U come home don't eat anything, just drink water with the spoon of the honey. After few such days U will sleep very well. It's the best way and with my friends it works too. and don't try differeny medicine drugs, it will be only worse.

I'm going to agree with everyone and say try a combination of all the suggestions.

1. Get plenty of exercise. This part is very important because it burns your physical energy.
2. Eat a good meal. Noodles, butter, red meat, greens, etc. - maybe one or two beers or glasses of wine but no more Laughing
3. Get comfortable around the time you want to sleep by watching a boring movie or reading something calming/relaxing. This burns some mental energy.
4. Put on relaxing music. What to play depends on your taste, but whatever brings you the most comfort is best. Beethoven piano concerto, some good trance, or even some Pink Floyd. This burns more mental energy.
5. ????
6. PROFIT!

With this outline you should begin to sleep in no time Winking

Yo dude i am the only guy here to use sleeping pills for some time and they are not worth it... They do not work in making you fall asleep immediately and there is a chance (usually 50-50) that you will wake up drowsy.

my advice wont be much different: pl plenty of water followenty of physical excercise in the early evening to tire yourself out then drink plenty of fluids then have a shower and just do something chillout for some time to get you ready for sleep. The new thing i want to add is this : when you are laying in bed realising you cant fall asleep you just project yourself to a happier place like ex-holiday and such. Sorry would write more but got to bounce

It's not bad, but exercising and eating direct before going to bed usually makes it worse not better.

Maybe you got Fatal familial insomnia? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_familial_insomnia Sad

Nah, you forgot, I've popped just about every kind of pill you can think of, habitually, sometimes handfuls at a time, to see what it felt like Winking You are right though, it won't do you any good long-term. You might like dropping off to sleep right away, but waking up 12 hours later and feeling like your eyes have been sandblasted just sucks.

Must say that noodles, butter, red meat isn't a good (evening) meal...it isnt good before going to bed. Not to mention that red meat isnt healthy at all.

I know some stuff about nutrition and before I even know what I know now I heard plenty of ppl (even had same experience myself sometimes) having bad dreams or waking up exhausted if they consumed some "heavy" (on stomach) food.

Maybe filling your stomach up can help U sometimes, but doing it every night, especially with wrong type of food in long run will cause so much trouble with your energy level and your whole metabolism U wont even believe it.

If U have problem..some warm milk or soothing tea will help with some easy snack (EASY) Happy and exercise if U fell up to it.

BTW. I rarely go to bed before 3-4 AM...cant say I have sleeping disorder its just the way I live lately. Sometimes when I cant fall to sleep even then (it happens) I see that my mind is so fired up with thinking about something...and thats keeping me up...so I just try to think about nothing. Let myself loose focus on that topic (maybe even think of many different irrelevant things to achieve that) or just thinking about thinking of nothing Happy it helps

The chase is better than the catch!

thx for all ur replies! i thought of a mix of ur answers..
@cryptor:
counting sheeps never worked for me, didnt try it for 2 hours though Big grin a friend got some sleep tea maybe i should borrow it.. but i cant really believe it helps enough.. melatonin isnt freely available in germany, googled it up.. but i thought of this one, sounds not bad:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerian_(herb)
think im gonna buy some and try..
@doctor:
esp books are my best way to fall asleep, but this alone seems to weak now, tried it the last days, doesnt work like it used to..
@kraster:
gotta learn Confused
@beast:
agree 100% to kinda everything u said. The focus/unfocus my thoughts thing doesnt work so well for me though, they jump around like they want..
@oska:
lol Big grin i dont think so, only got problems falling asleep, my sleep itself is wonderful perfect amazing deep long (at least 10 hours if im not disturbed) and everything positive u can imagine including a sneezing panda baby

so what most of u said sounds good:
a lot of exercise, think im gonna go for a run right now (after buying some valerian^^)..
after i eat sth heavy, i learn x hours (the necessary part Sigh ), i go to bed early (maybe some more exercise?), eat sth unheavy, drink hot milk, tea and take valerian and read a book till i fall asleep^^

sounds not bad (did i forget sth?) Big grin need some discipline to do this tho.. no quake today Surprise no meeting friends.. worst of all learning Sleepy

i'll let u know if it worked, thx again (if someone got another ultimative idea ofc he/she can post it)
