only ppl who works on professionals application for graphics or video editing will use the power of quad core cpus, nobody more atm. Reason is simple; their programs can split power on more than one thread.
Most game even dont use second core so what about 3rd and 4th ;>
So better for gamer is buy faster dual core than slower quadcore.

Hehe its interest question. Two years ago when come on trade dual core many ppl talk about their bad support for aplications. But test showed that is bullshit. It was my mistake when I buy single core cpu opteron 144.
Rage find some test (in game is like duo core,but in encoding video, normal uses win and others is better). Most powerfull cpu is quad core now. If 2000MHz x4 or 3000Mhz x2? Dont know what u means. But if u want buy some new pc choise 6600. Some mothebord from Intel or Asus and Gpu nvidia 8800Gt.......Zalman for cooler and case?.......bigger is better 
Its my opinion and trust me i have some skills with pc and oveclocking.
my tips Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2,40GHz 8MB....it have one cache for all core and 8mb is better than 4mb. (mainly for grab dvd or smt.) If u buy good cooler u can do overclock @ around 3GHz wihount up voltage. And price now?
around 200 euro. In February come down. (After christmass).

but anyway i wont be buying a new pc till after this year, prob around jan - feb for sure. so really any posts here is pointless unless everyone wants to argue with each other an say this is better etc lol.
u want to prove somthing is better i want to see benchmark results
