and rockets are sort of obsolete.

Do you want to die a horrible and gruesome death?
Rockets are the most ubererest type of weapon, pro in every aspect and designed to own noobs... There is nothing better then a well aimed rl air-shot. Big grin
btw yesterday for most of the game i had same amount of kills in rl/rg, at the end rg won by some 2-3 frags

It seems like a lot of people just use pretty much exclusively railgun. If you're doing that, try to learn how to use some other good weapons like BFG and shotgun. Unfortunately, there are lots of weapons that are sort of obsolete, so don't use those very much. Lightning works pretty good as a finishing weapon as well as shotgun. Plasma, machine gun, and rockets are sort of obsolete.

Umm no...

Each weapon has its use. Depending on the config of course, but here I'm talking about Plus config, Gods, Deex's, NWC, etc.

It's all about the range of the person to you. Sure you can rail people all day long, but its easier to hit someone with SG at close range than rail (SG has a spread factor). Plus you have to consider using weapons to move, which are GL, RL, LG, BFG and rarely PG.

Here's a little chart showing the approximate sweet spot for each weapon... Of course, theres a range of effectiveness, but this is about right.

[code:1]FAR NEAR
|------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| | | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | | |
| MG BFG | PG LG | GL SG |
| RL RL GAUNT
RG (fast) (slow, plus.cfg)

[/code:1]

Haha, I know I took my first line a bit too far Happy cg_fov and sensitivity is important, of course. I personally set sensitivity just large enough to the point where I can do a 180 degree turn quickly without the mouse going crazy. Also, except on maps like space maps, cg_fov should definitely be set at 105 or higher, IMO. Mouse acceleration is basically personal preference; 0 works fine. I just don't think that making everything look like a solid texture and very bright is important, as long as you use nice and bright enemy colors. I can't say about mouse and mousepad for sure, but I know I've always used a basic cloth mousepad and cheap logitech mouse. I'm sure an MX series mouse could be nothing but an improvement, but a normal mouse is just fine. Also, I can't stand hard, smooth surface mousepads. But I'll admit here, since I haven't tried one of those fancy mice, I can't say for sure. But I would definitely say that you don't need a fancy mouse to do good. And frankly, the idea of playing gauntlet bots forever for practice seems sort of ridiculous. Spend the time doing trickjumps or playing or something Happy

I did say that each weapon has its use, but there are certain weapons that should pretty much get no use other than for movement. Don't lie, I've watched a few of you play Happy I've never ever seen anyone other than myself seriously use plasma to actually fight (and then it's just for fun). And almost any time you would use macihne gun, it's better to use rail instead, unless they're quite low on health. I do think that although rockets can kill plenty good by shooting in between other shots, there is probably a better weapon to use at that time instead. However, that point is definitely debatable and there's plenty of people that successfully use rockets.

Also, I'm not sure if it's obvious or default in E+, but turning off cg_bob and all related things like that is a must for me. Turn off snow and those annoying voices as well Happy Make sure cg_truelightning is 1. Make your crosshair small. Turn off chat beeps. I do believe that headphones are important. You don't really need fancy ones (though it's definitely worth it for music outside of quake), but having some with good soundstaging is useful because it's easier to tell exactly where sounds are coming from.

I just reacted harshly because I strongly believe that you don't need stupid graphics settings (although I wouldn't put them on max) and a great mouse/mousepad as a requirement to doing good. The latter will help, but you can do fine without it.

I guess another thing I should say is learn to strafe-jump and bunny-hop good. These two combined with the physics and multijump in this mod is simply awesome. You can get moving quickly within a second or two without even using weapons and keep the speed or gain more the whole time while moving around. This is why I said don't walk around.

What do you mean? Worried (and why is the above not showing up as a quote?)

Ivko does fine on Deex's server sometimes. Sometimes. I never see him on any other server. Laughing

Yes. Moving around fast, always, when almost everyone has xp_enemymodel tankjr is a great idea. Don't ever stop to listen, walk and make no noise, et cetera. Let everyone know where you are constantly.

That's because you only play at Deex's. Laughing

I didn't realize there was a situation other than when an enemy is low on health where someone would use machinegun -- other than on a space map, when you shoot someone off the edge. Winking Personally if I'm at a distance and have the choice between railgun and machinegun I'm going to choose depending on the situation, and the situation changes constantly. I'm not going to rail at someone over and over when firing a BFG blast at them and then finishing off with machinegun fire is going to do it the quickest, so...

"Doing good", again, is subjective when you're on a server where 90% of the other players have either A). been playing the game for a week and don't have the full mod, or Cool. play frequently, visit the forums, and play on servers other than those full of... well... mostly people who are new to the game. Winking

My advice: don't listen to people like Ivko. What Term said is the best advice so far. Do whatever works for you, and as for general pointers Starless has it right with weapon range. Every weapon has a use, learn what works for you and exploit it to the fullest.

lol Funny guy, Ivko.

I find I'm wrong about a lot of things in life, so by default I won't shun someone for being wrong. I will shun someone for being pretentious, though. Cool
