Accel or not Accel?

Hi,

I will talk about a HUGE debate. But I'll simplify it to receive answers and to take a decision about which choice is better.

Should I add mouse acceleration to my configuration?

Why I ask you this? Following is what I think about those two types of configuration.

1 - Because, as maybe you know, it is easier and faster to earn skill without mouse acceleration, and twitchshots are also easier to do -that you have only one variable to calculate-. Moreover, you cant DeFRaG properly with mouse acceleration and I have a more jerky movement with it.

2 - Or, as maybe you have seen, the best players at quake in this world play with mouse acceleration (Cooller, fatal1ty, voO, Rapha, Stermy, ...) and have also a better aiming than me (yea, that's true). But I have a jerky movement with mouse acceleration, whereas -for example, the best I think- "Camel" has a so smooth movement -and not only because of the 1000 Hz mouse poll rate- that the mouse IS the prolongation of his hand. His aiming movement is so smooth and so accurate that I fall in love about it -and I wonder : how? I want to be so smooth and so easygoing-.

So I need different ways of thinking, I need you ideas to know if to have mouse acceleration is more efficient or not.

Thanks for answers.

Re: Accel or not Accel?

this is and extact from http://gamedrone.net/2009/03/02/18-tips-for-quake-live-beginners/

"13. Mouse settings

You can turn off mouse acceleration in your mouse drivers and in Windows. Many beginners play better with this ‘feature’ turned off, because mouse acceleration takes some time to get used to, but some do prefer to have this setting remain turned on. If you’re not experiencing any clear issues like consistently overshooting targets then you probably don’t want to turn it off.

As for mouse sensitivity. The common way to calculate your sensitivity is by determining how many centimeters you need to move for a 360 degree turn in-game. For many pro players this is roughly 24 cm on average, which is low sensitivity.

Does that mean you should use low sens too? No, it doesn’t! If you want to be good then use the sensitivity that suits you best. Low sens does not work for everyone and many people do play better with high sens. I’m an ultra-high sens player at 6cm/360 and it works much better for me than low sens, which I’ve tried to get used to on multiple occassions. Don’t stick with a setting that doesn’t work for you!"

i use no mouse accel on a lows sens however when i started quake i played on a ultra high sens with accel i reckon if i stayed with it in the long run i would be shooting just as well (apart from really long range shots i guess.....) its just about getting used to it and as skulll says make sure it dont limit you. (whatever that means Tongue )

I started playing with mouseaccel 1-4 during first year, after I turned it off completely, now i play with very very little acceleration cause it's most comfortable for fast reactions... but I switch both sens and accel "once a month", if i don't feel good with existing settings.

Re: Accel or not Accel?

if you want better flickshots and accurate fast mouse movement go for no mouse accel

if you want accurate mouse shots ("detailed crosshair pointing") and better stability in air go for mouse accel.

I want to add that \m_filter 1 also adds mouse acceleration ..
the mouse accel. that m_filter gives i consider not constant since it does the average of the last two mouse input positions.
the adv is that it gives bigger "detailed crosshair pointing" then without it, but it gives also this "variable acceleration". ( mouse_x = (oldmouse_x + newmouse_x)/2)

i have a big mousepad and can easy move the hand, so i dont use a mouseaccel...my aim is more accurate without accel and i feel better without it Happy
but u know some ppl like it and get used to it so...it all depends on how u train and get used to ur sens mouse...mousepad.... Big grin

stick with one comfortable setting and practice it and you will improve, there's no simple rule like "playing with (or without) accel would be better for you", it's individual, it's a question with no answer, although imo accel can help in the long run if you have bad hands or some parkinson-like disease Smug

(vo0 doesn't use accel, sens 3.3/default pitch/yaw with an intelli 3.0, which is quite low sens, and he still ruled on cpm duels)

similar here Happy

I played for years with accel and without accel i switched between 0 and some value many times. And i cant tell ya whatz better. With mouse accel its easier (for example) on 1++ map where are fast moves and long distances. So on this map you need mouse accel or fucking fast hand Big grin How you propably know, acceleration gives you advantage of low sens for long distances and high sens for short distances. Ideal for looking for good settings is to play against skilled players on middle distances (for example red armor room on dm7).

How Ultra said if you play with mouseaccel, you can time to time feel that your mouse settings isnt ideal like few days ago. so you have to change it. Of youre its easier to change just sensitivity than long looking for ideal sens/accel ratio and values Happy But if you find ideal sens/accel ratio and values, n1 will stop you (at least until you will feel your hand needs small change again)

Looking for the right thruth is neverending. Try it and enjoy.

What i learned about accel:
* The hardest is looking for ideal sensitivity and accel ratio cos when you increase accel you have to decrease sensitivity. and when you decrease accel, you have to increase accel.
* Accel and sens are depending on mouse dpi so when you change mouse, you cant use the same mouse settings
* When youre using accel, you will feel bigger difference between situations when youre playing with cold handz or perfused hand (simply normal)
* When youre looking for right accel value, start from lower values to higher Winking
* Thats propably all (at least for now)

Re: Accel or not Accel?

doesn't do a damn diff depending on your settings.

In the end, the setting which is best for you will give you best results and you will discover it other way round.

This might be with accel or without.

word.

i use 0.003 accel, any higher and my crosshair flys all over the place, so depends on your set up (mouse, dpi, sens, fov, etc)
