Influence mouse to game skills
i had the same problem like you in january 2006. I arrived e+ with genius netscroll optical. One of first optical mouses (or mice?) in shops. I played with this mouse many years so i had good aim a stuff with it. But in 10/2005 it started makes mystakes when i moved it. My hand was too fast for that shitty sensor and i rather stopped playing quake. i bought new mouse about christmas 2005 and joined e+ again in january 2006. I hoped that my sensitivity and acceleration settings will be useful for new mouse too but true is, that it was useless. I was looking for new mouse setting really long time. The best for trying new ideal sensitivity is playing 1on1...
you have two possibilities:
First: buy the same mouse
Second: buy better mouse and looking for new mouse settings for it
Comparison from esr - "Is the DeathAdder worth buying over the MSIE 3.0" (just an example of expensive mouse vs cheaper but still good mouse):
This question has been asked to me a few times, so i decided to make a comparison. Because the DeathAdder is really a lot more expensive than the MSIE 3.0.The comparison
The DeathAdder can natively perform a perfect control speed of 3,92 m/s which is far beyond any speed you will ever hit during game play, while the MSIE 3.0 has a native speed of 1,00 m/s which is easily hit by most players with low sensitivity. If we tweak the MSIE 3.0 to a 1000Hz using an USB Hack, we can get it to perform a perfect control speed of 1,55 m/s, which by far is enough for most players, unless you play with REALLY low sensitivity.
So if we compare a tweaked MSIE 3.0 to a DeathAdder they perform equally good for the kind of sensitivity most people use, so here it's basically a question of which visual design you like the best and what money you want to spend on the mouse.
But if you play at official competitions like the CPL you will not be allowed to apply a USB Hack to tweak the mouse, so here we have to look at the native performance of the two mice, where the DeathAdder truly outperforms the MSIE 3.0. So if you're going to play official tournaments, I'd definitely go for a DeathAdder.
Basically: Are you going to the CPL anytime soon? No? Then you don't need an expensive mouse just to do automatically what downloading an USB tweak does
If you liked your old mouse and it wasn't actually giving your problems; if you didn't feel it hindered your real abilities and it always responded it the way you wanted it to... I would've got another one if I liked the shape and all. The 1.1a is still my favourite shape and I'd still be on it if not only for the fact that I unfortunately can feel it's limitations and get frustrated when it doesn't do exactly on the screen what I know I am doing with my hand.
Now I'm off to sleep, heheheadache. Cursed summer, cursed warmth.

Go for 1.1a or Im explorer 3.0 ; very good mice, more than enough for quake, you don't need the brand new razer to play q3, and i love their shape, it just fits very well with hands !
If you ask a group of hardcore gamers like us, you'll invariably get page after page of what we already have three pages of: this mouse rocks, this one sucks, this one's okay, that one cost me 2 euros and kicked ass, this one cost me $40 and was a piece of shit, et cetera. Really what you have to do is just get whatever you can afford and feel comfortable with. Try out some mice/mouses, read lots of reviews, pick them up when you're in the store and see what weight/balance appeals to you the most.
I dunno how to shop for a mouse, really, but I think it's sort of like shopping for shoes. You should "try them on" a little before you throw the money down. I use an MX510, by the way, but I do use a USB hack, Logitech MouseWare Advanced, and the CPL mouse fix.

Mouses/mice, wtf, I have always wondered the same
Its mouses when refering to computer equipment and mice when refering to animals
i bought g5 like a year ago and i guess it helped to improve my skills on 7-10% (avg. rail acc.) during next ~2 weeks
and about 3 month ago my friend gifted me for my b-day a pro mousepad ((razer) better say aluminium desk ) and it helped on 3-5%
but i heard some cpma chempions still playing on very old mouses (thx Foksie for hint:D)
imho mx5** good choice and pretty cheap now to buy
btw better measure a full turn (360 degrees) on u old mouse and try to setup new 1 on something similar, would be easier
kinda agree with torz. its all atleast partly in ur head. so its more the way u feel thats important. anyways i used to play on random computers (still do) most of which had the cheapo shitty mice (and i do think its mice even in the computer world ) with horrible feet that collected dust and dirt like it was its favorite food. anyways got an mx518 + qck+ combo about 5 months back. it did make a lot of difference. (the difference mostly being in consistency. earlier on the shitty mice how much the cursor moves in relation to the distance u move ur mouse was always a dicey question, u could never tell for sure.)
but as torz said, if u already have a mouse that ur comfy with and it isnt majorly faulty, theres little point in going for an expensive mouse. but then again this depends on what u mean by expensive. the 50 bucks i spent on my mouse and pad combo wasnt all that expensive for me. it mite be for you.
I know that I won't be master automaticlly when I buy better mouse... but i heard a lot of opinions, ppls was saying: playing on pro mouse is much easier, better and more exact.
But if you say it will give nothing, so there is no sens to spent cash to pro mouse, so maybe I should just buy one more opto325?
