Re: External hard disk usb

On the first thought I say you have to change ur HDD anyways, we could do some more checking with checkdisk etc.

about imaging a whole drive, go to http://drivesnapshot.de/en/index.htm ,download and do a snapshot (use 9999999 as maximal file size for the image) - it will not repair anything thats corrupted in ur filesystem and it will probably abort if you have to many bad sectors. Furthermore it does some stupid stuff with the file system so you should defragment the partition after doing a reimg onto another hdd.

you can check whats in the bootloader, or lets make it rather easy, what does your bios return when you try booting from ur non bootable hdd?

Did you changed something on your running system? New hardware or driver?
I have had a similar problem some monts ago.... a new installed Win7 (before installation I changed different hardware components like MBoard, RAM, VCard...) couldn't be started. The installation worked properly BUT no system start.
After I tried a lot of things to find the issue (like a new installatio with HDD format, HDD check, changed the MBoard battery, checked the MBoard settings, repaired the boot sector, etc..) I came to the conclusion that the last thing which could cause the issue is the power supply!! AND it was the power supply Happy

Please check your power supply:
- shut down the PC
- plug OUT the power supply cable
- push the PC start button [you will hear some noises - for 2-3 seconds the PC fan]
- plug IN the power supply cable
- Start your PC
--> when now everything works well, you have to change your power supply.

It could be that some condensators from your power supply are damaged and thats why your MBoard has not enough power for all the Hardware you have installed.
A short test does not hurt and doesn't take long time.

apollo, you can just pull the button on the power supply and hit the on button few times, way faster.

1. check SMART of your 500GB HDD. Iam not sure if you wrote its damaged or not.
2. If its ok theres reason to use it for system
3. before you start installation to this disc is good to disconnect the older1 (windows has crappy feature to make a shit on both discs - i think its on win7 but iam not sure and you cant do anything wrong when you disconnect it)
4. winXP CANT work with AHCI so check BIOS settings before installation
5. do you have both SATA drives in boot menu? If yes, start windows installation
6. Why the fuck youre using such old system?

AD1: About your question. Capatibility to boot from USB external hard drive depending just on your motherboard. All modern operation systems support it. But i dont think that almost 15 years old OS can do it. Anyway you can test it with 16GB flashdisc.

AD2: If your mobo havent USB 3.0 then fuck on it. USB 2.0 is fucking slow for system disc

When
my previous 500 gb hd died I bought new disk and power supply just in
case if that was the reason, so new components were plugged in, power
supply has its own cables, so all was new except 2 SATA cables that
seems to be alright as DVD is working properly.

After about 2 weeks, the problems started again with new disk, so thats why I think
its the motherboard that cause all of this itself, it is ASUS P5KPL-CM.

1) SMART, dunno what is it anyway and how to check it, but its enabled in BIOS, attached screenshot from the Hard disk Sentinel
2) I cannot unplug old disk and set faster as first in order, because its still not detectable as boot, when windows wants to start it says to attach working disk, its like invisible.
6) I got only 2GB of RAM, thats why Sad
AD2) I got 4GB pendrive, also I saw some portable win xp to be used from flash disk, some very basic version specially for that.
AD2) Yes I know, my motherboard support only usb 2.0, I know it is slower.
