i would only back up pics mp3's an video's.
there no gaunrentee that there gonna be virus free an its rare that virus's carry in these, just make sure when uve put them on a cd that uve scanned them with various AV software.

scan all saved files more u cant do.

a virus will not try to get into this files, because they could be deleted by the user. a virus is ever in files you will not delete (win32 ect)

It's called ghosting. You install a clean machine from scratch (all the basic programs u need), you dont even connect to the net, you make an image of that which u safe keep and when the day comes to format you just use that image to re-install your shit. Voila, in 20 mins you have everything installed/virus free and ready to go.

@trance: i know what a ghost/clone/image is, lol. but if i thought about somnebody reinstalling his system and then put back his old files into new installation and with that he puts back old virus into new system ;-P

Since we both recommended the same but forgot to mention one important thing,which is that ghost images take a couple of gigabytes of space,depending on the size of your partition,but they are worth GOLD.System restore sucks,ghost rulez.

Hirens boot cd contains tons of xtremly useful apps and its a bootable cd,u can diagnose ram and hdd,create and edit partitions,format,ghost...so u dont have to install ghost in win,its allready on the cd.
